Most interior and exterior doors use one of a small number of standard bore-hole sizes, so a new knob can usually be matched to the existing door prep without any carpentry. The two measurements that matter most are the backset (the distance from the door edge to the center of the knob) and whether the door needs a keyed exterior knob, a keyless privacy knob for a bathroom or bedroom, or a passage knob with no lock at all for a closet or hallway.
