The Basic Process

A pin-tumbler lock — the most common residential and commercial lock type — is opened using a set of small pins matched to a specific key. Rekeying removes the lock cylinder, swaps those pins for a new combination, and reassembles the same lock so only the new key works. The door hardware itself, the deadbolt body, the strike plate, all stay exactly as they are. It's a different job from replacing a lock, which swaps in entirely new hardware.

Most homeowners and business owners choose rekeying after a move-in, a lost key, an employee or tenant turnover, or simply wanting old keys to stop working. It's typically faster and less expensive than full replacement when the existing lock is still in good working condition.

What to have ready when you call: why you're considering rekeying (move-in, lost key, ownership or tenant change) and how many locks are involved, so we can confirm whether rekeying is the right fit and whether we can help before any technician is scheduled.
